An Exciting New Event

An exciting new event is being sponsored by Florida Sportsman magazine. A spectacular golf tournament will be combined with a fishing competition prior to the opening of ICAST, being held July 15 – 18, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. ICAST is produced by the American Sportfishing Association.

The Florida Sportsman Bass & Birdies Classic will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the beautiful and challenging 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature New Course at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, a links design similar to the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland.

“The golf is a Scramble-Best Ball format, meaning teams of four players hit each shot and the best shot is selected,” said Doug Kelly, Tournament director. “The three other players retrieve their balls and hit from the best position, and the same until the ball is holed out.”

However, on four designated holes, one team member will fish in bass-hungry lakes while the other three plays the scramble. The number of bass caught will result in bonus points taken off the final golf score, so it pays to make birdies and catch bass.

This unique golf-and-fishing event is open to ASA members and registered ICAST attendees.

The $95 entry fee includes play on a Signature Jack Nicklaus-designed course; golf cart and range balls; bass fishing eligibility; a tournament-embroidered Mojo Polo shirt ($46 value); a lunch buffet and awards banquet; complimentary lockers and locker room services; customized scorecards with live leaderboard and more.

Rental clubs and shoes are available as well as a shuttle to transport those staying at the ICAST headquarters hotel to and from Grand Cypress Golf Club.

“It’s a beautifully manicured course with a first-rate clubhouse and banquet room,” said Kelly. “Everyone who participates will be impressed with the facilities and enjoy a great morning of golf and fishing prior to the ICAST show.”

Learn first-hand about what women want and dial up your ability to more effectively target the female angling consumer from product selection to marketing efforts.

The "rep" and retailer relationship is an ever-evolving dynamic that, when actively fostered, can lead to outstanding long-term success, sales and profitability for the specialty retailer. Historically, industry manufacturers have used representatives to showcase, educate, promote and sell product to the specialty retailer. However, many successful retailers have found their best representatives are now more than that: they are true business partners. During this session, manufacturers’ representatives and retailers will discuss how creating a “Dynamic Duo” can overcome obstacles and achieve success.

He'll talk about how investing in conservation creates long-term relationships with customers and the fly fishing community that will pay dividends for years and generations to come.

Presented by Bill Kendy, Kendy Consulting, Lansing, Michigan

For most owners the biggest asset, or potential asset, in their future wealth portfolio is their business, so understanding how to maximize success should be the highest priority. However, in today’s competitive environment it is very difficult to start and grow a business. Data from the Small Business Administration says that 33 percent of businesses fail in the first year. This presentation will explore the five most common reasons for failure and the six critical factors of success necessary for business growth. This is a great session for the savvy business owner who wants to succeed in the highly competitive sportfishing industry.

The Dynamic Duo: The Retailer and The Rep
Presented by Michael White, Blue Ribbon Sales; Van Rollo, Mountain Sports Products; Crosby Beane, Pure Fishing; Jay Decker, Patagonia; and George Cook, Angler’s Rendezvous

Presented by Tom Keer, president, The Keer Group; Ross Purnell, editor, Fly Fisherman magazine; Ken Cook, managing editor, Fishing Tackle Retailer; Rich Hohne, Digital Marketing and PR Manager, Simms Fishing Products; and Peter Jenkins, president and CEO, The Saltwater Edge.

Presented by Alex Brooks, Managing Partner, Brookmark Research Services, Marblehead, Massachusetts

Business Planning 101:  Who Are You and What is Your Business?
Presented by Karl Stearns, business consultant, Profits Plus Solutions, Mountainhome, Pennsylvania

A successful business plan needs to define the owners and their business. There should be a clear picture for investors, lenders, customers and even the owners themselves in order to avoid “identity crisis.” This session will provide a framework for preparing a comprehensive statement about your enterprise. Once you establish this important part, you will be in a better position to proceed with the next important part of your business plan.

Best Angling Practices Can Lead to Better Fish Conservation and a Healthier Business

Presented by Andy Danylchuk, Ph.D., Environmental Biology and Ecology assistant professor, University of Massachusetts at Amherst

If the recreational fishing industry relies on customers to catch fish and enjoy the overall angling experience, can conveying best practices in marketing campaigns contribute to better fisheries as well as a better experience and an enhanced revenue stream?  During this session, Dr. Danylchuk will examine a suite of best fishing practices that science has helped developed as well as review the potential benefits and challenges associated with using them to change the social norm within the recreational angling community while also helping to sell more products.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

All businesses have a core around which their activities and decisions revolve. During this session you will look at yourself in relation to your competitors and your market place. How do your customers view you? What services and products will you offer to set you apart? What type of entity will you use, i.e., sole proprietor, LLC, general partnership, limited partnership or a C or S corporation. Who has the money and how will it be used?

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Why Fly?
Presented by Janna Superstein, president, Superfly International Inc., Edmonton, AB, Canada

We will provide you with information on how to connect with your local fly fishing community and industry resources to support your entry into this growing category. Women make more than 80 percent of all purchasing decisions in the average American household. Yet, the fly fishing industry often fails to market, develop and sell women-specific angling gear. This panel of retailers and professional fly fishermen will delve into what draws women to the sport, what gear they covet, what products are moving for women and what retailers can improve upon to better tell the story of fly fishing to female consumers. Learn first-hand about what women want and dial up your ability to more effectively target the female angling consumer from product selection to marketing efforts.

During this session, we’ll set a group of esteemed angling bloggers loose to break down what topics are gaining the most reach, and what angling issues/trends they are most keen to write about. Bloggers are often our best ally in spreading excitement about the industry, and keeping them well-stocked with interesting fodder is just plain smart business for any retailer, manufacturer or guide.

Exhibitor Press Room Guidelines

The ICAST Press Room is another way for exhibitors to get the word out about their products and services. Exhibitors are encouraged to place product information and press kits in the Press Room for media.

If you need assistance regarding press outreach, please contact Communications Director Mary Jane Williamson, (703) 519-9691, x227.

General Guidelines

  • Only ICAST exhibitors and American Sportfishing Association members can place materials in the press room.
  • ICAST sponsors will receive prominent reserved bin space, signage and other special visibility in the Press Room and in other ICAST promotions.
  • Bins are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Each exhibitor is allowed one bin.
  • Exhibitors are responsible for keeping their bins stocked throughout the show, although ASA staff will certainly help as much as possible.
  • Press kits, catalogs and other materials may also be distributed in exhibiting companies’ booths, but not in the aisles on the show floor or other common areas.
  • Because of agreements with our host hotels, ASA must give prior approval for show daily-type publications or other promotional materials intended for distribution at the hotels.
  • ASA staff reserves the right to move or remove materials that do not comply with any of these guidelines.

Press Room Bulletin Board

Exhibitors planning press conferences, product demonstrations, celebrity guest appearances or any other special events or booth attractions may place posters, notices or announcements on the ICAST Press Room Bulletin Board. Please limit the size to 8.5” x 11”.

Press Conference Room

If you need to arrange for a press conference room, please send an email to ICAST@asafishng.org.

Delivering Materials

Materials MUST be hand delivered to the ICAST Press Room located on the show floor adjacent to the New Product Showcase between noon and 5:00 p.m. on, Tuesday, July 9, 2013. We recommend providing 100-200 units of material for the ICAST Press Room. Limited storage space is available beneath each bin.

John Mazurkiewicz jpmazurk@ameritech.net

Designed to make 80-foot-plus with less effort than traditional 9-foot rods, the new short length, fast-action PRO4x ShortStix are a true breakthrough for fly anglers. Using today’s new generation of short head fly lines, the 7-foot-6-inch rods load easily and offer exceptional casting distance especially with big, bulky, air-resistant flies. The four 3-piece ShortStix fly rods are inherently lighter and stronger – in hand they have the feel of a 9-foot 5 weight. Rods offered include an 8/9 weight for use with 300- to 350-grain fly lines; a 9/10 weight for 375- to 425-grain lines; a 10/11 weight for 425- to 475-grain lines; and a 11/12 weight for 475- to 525-grain weights.

DOWNLOAD GUIDELINES AND PRESS CREDENTIALS REQUEST FORM ICAST 2013 2013 Guidelines and Form for Obtaining Press Credentials

The Press Room is a valuable resource for the hundreds of media representatives who attend ICAST. The Press Room provides a place to:

• Conduct interviews

• Find information about exhibitors and their products

• File stories through free Wi-Fi

• Network with colleagues

• Ask questions about the American Sportfishing Association and ICAST

General Media and Press Room Guidelines

In order to help ensure that media representatives have a productive and enjoyable experience at ICAST, here are some general guidelines for media regarding the Press Room:

  • The use of Press Room resources is for Media-Editorial badge holders only. Exhibitors are permitted in the Press Room to drop of media kits and other materials. Other attendees may accompany Media-Editorial representatives to the Press Room for interviews and business-related activities.

  • ICAST attendees with Media-Editorial badges are free to use the resources in the Press Room. All other attendees are asked to use the Cyber Lounge or other convention center resources for computer and Internet use.

  • Media-Editorial representatives may use the interview areas on a first-come, first-served basis. Any banners, props, backgrounds, logos or signage must be removed at the conclusion of the interview(s).

  • Media-Editorial representatives who are also ASA members (non-exhibiting members) who wish to place magazines or other informational materials in the Press Room may do so as space allows. Bins are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis (one bin per company) with premium space reserved for ICAST sponsors, exhibitors and ASA members.

  • Only credentialed photographers and videographers with Media-Editorial badges are permitted to film during the show. Photographers and videographers are required to ask permission before filming and must refrain from filming those who do not grant permission.

  • Photography and videography are not permitted on the general show floor. All photography and videography must take place in designated areas or within an exhibitor’s booth. The exhibitor’s permission is required.

  • Because of agreements with our host hotels, ASA must give prior approval for show daily-type publications or other promotional materials intended for distribution at the hotels. ASA staff reserves the right to move or remove materials that are in breach of these guidelines.
